Colloque "Pleins-feux sur (i)elles : Visibiliser le genre en traduction"

Présentation

In her seminal 1988 article, Lori Chamberlain revealed the pervasiveness of gendered metaphors – such as the so-called “belles infidèles” – in translation-related discourse. Construed as feminine and derivative, translation was then expected to serve a masculine, authoritative source text. Still today, at a time when women and other gender minorities make up the overwhelming majority of practitioners in the field, translators and especially translators belonging to gender minorities are still often held to the ideal of transparency, or even invisibility, despite the immense progress made to redefine translation as a symbolic, political, and potentially empowering gesture.  

More than fifty years after feminist scholars in Canada began to consider the intersection between gender and translation, (in)visibility – of both translators and of gender minorities more broadly – will be brought to the fore during the two-day bilingual conference “Gender in the Spotlight: (In)Visibility in Translation / Pleins feux sur (i)elles : visibiliser le genre en traduction”. Panels, roundtables, workshops and performative readings will address the themes of (in)visibility and inclusivity; creative and collective strategies and approaches; the ethics of mediation, including in the era of machine translation; and the realities of feminist and queer publication in the past and present.
